2013 IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Dubai World Championship

It’s hardly surprising that, in such a money-orientated sport, Europe’s finest are not measured on points, titles or rankings, but earnings.

The Race to Dubai is over and the season-ending, self-styled Greatest Golf Show on Earth is upon us. Sitting atop the cash list is PGA Championship winner Martin Kaymer. Hot on his tail is US Open champion Graeme McDowell. It promises to be a epic tussle between the Ryder Cup teammates who have both really come into their own this year, Ping K15 Series.

The Northern Irishman goes into the Dubai Championship in better form, but his German rival is around £250,000 better off as the 48-tournament slugfest comes to a shuddering halt with just four laps of the Jumeirah Golf Estate to play.

“I’m within touching distance now,” said McDowell. “I have a few things to brush up on before Thursday, but all in all, I’m driving the ball great, which is key to next week and I’m feeling really good about my game.

“I’m playing well enough to win [in Dubai] and that’s all I can ask. I can’t control his ball – I can only control mine.”

25-year-old Kaymer decided to skip the Hong Kong Open to concentrate on this weekend, Callaway RAZR X Irons.

“I’ve played very well the last few months and going into this week I feel confident about my game,” he said.

“Hopefully I can play well and make sure that I win the Race to Dubai somehow.

“To win my first Major and to be part of the winning Ryder Cup team, TaylorMade Burner 2.0 Iron Set, is way above my expectations to be honest. Obviously when you win a Major you know that you can win any tournament in the world.

“It’s been a fantastic season for me.”

Kaymer also has an ulterior motive to win in Dubai – Lee Westwood’s world number one spot. A victory for the German would mean Westwood would have to finish second to retain top spot.

The TaylorMade Burner 2.0 Iron Set consists of irons individually engineered, resulting in the enhancement of multiple club properties that promote distance, uniform distance-gaps, increased playability and better sound and feel. A multi-functional sole lowers the center of gravity and reduces turf-drag to make it easy to launch shots high and long, while the inverted cone in each clubface is strategically sized and shaped center of gravity location in each head is precision-placed to optimize long-, middle- and short-iron flight; high-coefficient of restitution faces promote fast ball speed for long distance in the long-irons.
